DESCRIPTION This study-unit offers participants registered for a Certificate Course in the Practice of Cooperative Societies an understanding of the rich context to the origins and developments of the principles and practices of cooperativism in a variety of countries. The opportunity to carve out a 'third way' between private and state capitalism will be explored.

Particular focus will be placed on experiences of cooperativism outside Malta, including the 'employee stock ownership options' of the United States, the Consumer Coop Movement in the United Kingdom, the Raffeisen Cooperative Banks in Germany, the Mondragon Cooperative Movement in the Basque Country, Spain.

Specific case studies will look at the Scott Bader Commonwealth and the John Lewis Partnership, both in the UK.

Study-unit Aims:

To enable course participants to:
- develop an international understanding and appreciation of the principles of cooperativism;
- assess and evaluate local developments in cooperativism in a broader, regional and international context;
- examine the conditions which led to these specific cooperative 'experiences' and analyse their reproducability in Malta.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- refer competently to international experiences of cooperativism;
- understand the conditions which led to such experiences;
- compare and contrast local experiences in cooperativism with similar situations overseas.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- read about, and appreciate, international experiences of cooperativism;
- critically assess the successes and limitations of specific cooperative experiences abroad;
- competently consider the transferability of such overseas experiences to Malta.
