| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit allows students to obtain a general introduction to University, the Centre for Labour Studies, the topic of occupational health and safety and many basic academic skills including: literacy and communication skills; information technology skills; and academic literature searching and referencing. Study-Unit Aims: The main aim is to prepare students for academic life, academic writing and presentation. Furthermore this unit will furnish them with other necessary skills such as the ability to utilise IT systems securely and introduce them to the topic of occupational health and safety. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Comprehend the organisation and function of the University, the Centre and its research and identify where to locate pertinent information such as services, regulations, and online resources; - Establish the nature of study-units and best practice when undertaking relevant assessment methods including: assignments, case-studies, exams and presentations. This will be demonstrated through practical sessions, mock tests and the final assessment; - Appraise techniques of note taking, reporting skills and group work during practical sessions; - Reproduce the APA (American Psychological Association) method of referencing when writing an academic document; - Appreciate the different modes of communication and the different roles and settings that require different communication skills; - Recognise general security measures and legal issues associated with the use of IT systems; - Evaluate the relevance and purpose of occupational health and safety in Maltese and foreign workplaces by means of describing practical examples during lectures and a final assessment; - Analyse the essential determinants of occupational health and safety (OHS) as they relate to different industries and sectors during lectures and final assessment; - Recognise key sources of scientific health and safety information and data to be utilised within the final assessment and throughout the course; - Illustrate the roles and functions of historical and contemporary international and local organisations for safety, health and the environment by means of relevant case studies. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Demonstrate competency in referencing using the APA referencing system when writing academic papers; - Employ adequate techniques of note taking, reporting skills and group work during practical sessions and throughout the course; - Locate resources within the University library including both physical and electronic material to be utilised for academic means; - Demonstrate competency in producing academic documents and presenting presentations relevant to OHS; - Utilise IT systems in a secure manner.
