DESCRIPTION - Introduction to Audiology
- Anatomy and Physiology of the Audio-Vestibular System
- Sound transmission, speech discrimination, reverberation, measurement of sound
- Pathology of the human ear: cochlear and cochlear nerve pathology, other pathological conditions
- Prevalence, incidence and causes of hearing loss in children
- Behavioural and physiological assessment procedures
- Neonatal and later screening for hearing impairment
- Diagnostic paediatric audiology
- Re/habilitation of the hearing impaired child
- Management of the hearing impaired child in a multidisciplinary context.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit provides the theoretical audiological knowledge that is relevant for speech-language pathologist. Emphasis is give to the knowledge and skills required for the interpretation of test results and referral decisions.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Appreciate the assessment, diagnosis and management of children and adults with all types and degrees of hearing impairment (including auditory processing disorder);
- Show an understanding of teamwork in speech and hearing science;
- Plan and manage re/habilitation programmes for hearing impaired children and their carers.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Interpret results of basic audiological tests;
- Differentiate between types and degrees of hearing loss in children;
- Consider speech and language acquisition as well as social interaction in the management of children with hearing impairment and related disorders.
