Study-Unit Description

CODE CMT5031

TITLE Developmental Speech Sound Disorders

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 10

DEPARTMENT Communication Therapy

DESCRIPTION This study-unit will build on students’ existing theoretical knowledge of developmental speech sound disorders and gives the students a deeper understanding of current theory, classifications and evidence in the field in relation to the management of such disorders particularly in the bilingual local context. The existing speech processing models and assessment protocols and their application to the local context will be evaluated. Therapeutic procedures for specific sub-types of speech sound disorders will be analyzed in the light of evidence-based practice.

Study-unit Aims:

To enhance students’ understanding and evaluation of the theoretical contentious issues related to speech sound disorders. Models of the speech processing chain and its deficits, assessment and differential diagnosis of sub-types of disorders and treatment efficacy studies will be discussed in detail, particularly in relation to their application to the Maltese context.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- appreciate the current theoretical knowledge regarding the early stages of monolingual and bilingual speech development;
- evaluate the different models of the speech processing chain that impact on the proposed deficits in case of children with speech impairment;
- recognise indicators of speech impairment in children and differentiate between different sup-groups of speech impairment;
- identify characteristics of sub-groups of speech difficulties together with potential contributing factors;
- appraise available cross-linguistic evidence on the nature of speech sound disorders in monolingual and bilingual children;
- apply knowledge and research evidence to the management of children referred with a possible speech difficulty.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- critically analyse theoretical perspectives and cross-linguistic research findings on speech development and disorders;
- differentiate between delayed and different speech sound disorders in monolingual and bilingual children and identify co-morbid conditions;
- appraise and apply evidence pertaining to the effectiveness of relevant service delivery models.
