DESCRIPTION The Design and Creative Techniques study-unit is aimed to provide comprehensive theoretical and practical information to students who intend to specialise in graphic design for print. It includes the following modules:

- Interpreting a client's brief
- Approaching creative design through information gathered
- 2D composition and sketching
- Colour theory
- Scanning and colour separation
- Modern printing processes and their requirements including:
o Single, two colour and four colour offset printing; varnishing; blind embossing; die stamping; hot foiling etc.
o Web offset
o Silkscreen printing
- Overview of various design software packages, e.g. Photoshop, Freehand, Illustrator and Page maker
- Single colour and full colour design requirements
- Press advert design across various genres
- 3D Packaging design (boxes, packets, bags etc.) including cutter artwork
- Bottle label design
- Logo design
- Corporate image design
- Billboard design
- Magazine and book layout

The study-unit puts into practice the above through demonstrations and the practical assignments given.
