DESCRIPTION | A specific theme that is not normally covered by the syllabus and is developed by the student through an intensive programme of personal reading, research and written work under the regular guidance of designated tutors. It is conducted on an individual basis; students work largely on their own, without the need to attend formal lectures, although tutorials will be necessary. The choice of the theme requires the approval of the tutor concerned and the coordinator of the study-unit. The tutor's role is to: (i) help the students to articulate the theme; (ii) suggest methods of approaching the theme; (iii) direct the students as to which material they are expected to cover and which original texts and secondary works are essential reading; (iv) determine what work is to be completed by a target date. Study-unit Aims: To guide the student in the exploration of a specific theme not normally covered by the syllabus. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Explore widely a specific theme; - Describe and critically appraise such literature; - Demonstrate critical thinking skills in the evaluation and analysis of said literature. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Compare and analyze literature and other publications on a specific theme; - Carry out personal reading and research on an individual basis working largely on their own; - Meet individual targets and deadlines in relation to research and academic work; - Produce an in-depth written assignment on the exploration of a specific theme at the required academic level. Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: No fixed reading list as this will depend on the theme chosen by each student. |
