MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Digital Arts

DESCRIPTION Programming for Artists and Designers will consist of lectures introducing students to the fundamentals of programming, followed by special topics that will expand on their ability to express themselves experimentally with code. Core programming skills will include: variables, conditionals, loops and random numbers. Special topics will include: image, video, and audio processing.

Study-unit Aims:

- Provide a solid foundation of programming experience;
- Provide students with skills to develop interactive and experimental programs;
- Encourage students to think critically about interactivity and experimentation in code.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will:
- Be familiar with the fundamental concepts of visual programming;
- Be familiar with the fundamental concepts of interactive software;
- Be able to critically discuss and justify interactive and experimental projects;
- Be able to describe the main programming constructs (variables, conditions and loops).

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Implement programs that make use of variables, conditions, loops and generation or random numbers;
- Implement programs that can import images and make use of image data;
- Implement programs that can import audio files and make use of audio data;
- Develop their own experimental programs that express their ideas and interests.
