DESCRIPTION The study-unit deals with the economic analysis of industry and attempts to describe satisfactory explanations of the ways in which economic forces operate within the industrial sector. The study-unit covers the applications of micro-economic theory to the analysis of firms, markets and industries. Central to this branch of economics is the "Structure-Conduct-Performance" paradigm and its reformulations. The unit will also cover industrial policy and competition policy aspects relating to Malta within the EU context.

Study-unit Aims:

- Understanding of key concepts related to industrial economics.
- Application of key concepts to real-life situations, including reference to local and international markets.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to understand the following key concepts/ topics:
- Rationale behind the Industrial Economics field;
- The Structure-Conduct-Performance Paradigm;
- The Firm and Corporate Growth;
- Market Concentration;
- Diversification, Merger and Innovation;
- Pricing and Advertising;
- Monopolies, and Issues related to State or Private Control;
- Foundations of Industrial Policy, and Industrial Policy in Practice;
- Competition Policy.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Understanding and interpreting economic situations emerging from economic reports and studies;
- Application of key concepts to real-life situations, including reference to local and international markets.
