DESCRIPTION This study-unit focuses on examining how financial markets and financial institutions work and the economic rationale behind current financial tools, rules and structures. Moreover, this study-unit focuses on how the current financial crisis has emerged and propagated to various sectors and countries and the response that has been taken to address the challenges posed by this financial crisis.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to empower students with the understanding of financial markets and their role in producing high economic growth. This study-unit also presents a coherent framework for analyzing financial structure. This study-unit will also enable students to gain a clearer understanding of recent and current events in financial markets and institutions.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- describe how the financial system works and why it changes as it does;
- provide an analysis of the financial markets and institutions by close examination of their effects throughout the economy;
- critically appraise the occurrence of the recent financial crisis, how it threatened economic stability and what had been done to contain the damage to the effected economies.

2. Skills:

This study-unit enhance the students’ analytical skills for understanding the workings of today’s financial markets and institutions and the connections between the theoretical concepts and their real-world applications.
