TITLE Waste Management: Key Concepts and Challenges in the Maltese Context

DESCRIPTION This study-unit is intended to introduce students to the different waste streams and the various management options. The study-unit will cover topics related to solid, liquid and hazardous waste characterization, production, storage, collection and transportation. It will also include waste management options such as Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM). In the second part of the study-unit, students will critically explore contemporary approaches such as waste reduction, composting, recycling, alternative disposal systems and zero-waste initiatives. The use of local and overseas case studies will be used to evaluate the economics of waste generation and waste management. Specific challenges related to waste management in the Maltese Islands will also be addressed in this study-unit, with students undertaking fieldwork at various waste management facilities on the archipelago to better understand the issues involved along with the initiatives being carried out.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to:

- Familiarize students with the various waste streams and their related management issues;
- Enable students to critically appraise policy and managerial approaches to waste management;
- Develop students' ability to articulate the various international and local waste management policies and practices, the latter in the context of EU obligations;
- Enable students to evaluate and assess local waste management facilities and techniques.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Characterize waste streams, treatment and disposal methods;
- Describe and discuss the economics of waste generation and management;
- Critically evaluate waste management approaches;
- Explain the relevance of EU legislation to local waste management activities;
- Appraise the various local waste generation and disposal scenarios.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Critically analyze waste management regimes;
- Critically appraise the impact of the different waste treatment and disposal methods on the environment;
- Compare and contrast the feasibility of waste management options for different contexts;
- Evaluate contemporary issues related to international and local waste generation and disposal.
