DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is intended to introduce students to the different waste streams and the various management options available. The study-unit will cover topics related to solid, liquid and hazardous waste characterization, production, storage, collection and transportation. It will also include waste management options such as Integrated Waste Management (IWM). In the second part of the study-unit, students will critically explore contemporary approaches such as waste reduction, composting, recycling, alternative disposal systems and zero-waste initiatives. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit aims to: - Familiarize students with the various waste streams and their related management issues; - Enable students to critically appraise policy and managerial approaches to waste management; - Develop students' ability to articulate the various international and local waste management policies and practices, the latter in the context of EU obligations. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Characterize waste streams, treatment and disposal methods; - Describe and discuss the economics of waste generation and management; - Critically evaluate waste management approaches. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Critically analyze waste management regimes; - Critically appraise the impact of the different waste treatment and disposal methods on the environment; - Compare and contrast the feasibility of waste management options for different contexts; - Evaluate contemporary issues related to waste generation and disposal.
