UM LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL Not Applicable

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Centre for English Language Proficiency

DESCRIPTION This study-unit builds on previous basic skills practised in ENG1063 to encourage greater self-awareness and autonomous self-improvement in English speech fluency, suited to a range of registers, spanning both informal and formal contexts of speech. Students will have ample opportunity to experiment with and practise their English speaking skills in small groups in a non-pressured environment, where the focus is on building confidence, and gaining greater control over key aspects of the English language. Through a cycle of fluency- and accuracy-based speaking tasks and roles, students will directly experience and learn to use a range of strategies, skills and language patterns in order to ensure more effective and clear communication in English.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to:
- equip students with the skills, strategies and language patterns necessary for effective and clear spoken communication in English;
- give students ample opportunity to speak in English in a supportive and non-pressured environment;
- equip students with English speaking skills that can directly enhance both their academic and eventually their professional performance when using English.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- identify key differences in Maltese English and Standard English speaking patterns that may affect intelligibility in non-Maltese environments;
- grasp important distinctions in register at the pragmatic level of conversation analysis, when using English;
- identify strategies to enhance lexical access in English speaking situations with a view to increasing fluency;
- self-assess levels of accuracy in English grammar in order to better control their speech and the messages they intend to convey.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- perform to the best of their ability in a range of skills useful for speech fluency, including effectively synthesising notes, making short, accurate, spoken interventions, speaking at length (monologues), and engaging in open debates;
- use their language knowledge to self-assess the accuracy and effectiveness of their speech in English (self-awareness; self-assessment);
- speak fluently in English in informal and comfortable environments, and also, in a range of more formal and/or more stressful conditions.
