DESCRIPTION The purpose of this study-unit is to afford students the opportunity to focus more closely, and in a guided way, on an aspect of their choice in the areas of literary studies, or linguistics, or cultural criticism.

Students may choose to concentrate on a theme to be explored in the works of one or more writers who do not formally feature in the course programme. They may, for instance, choose to focus on the theme of failure in the novels of Evelyn Waugh, or the different forms of humour in literature. Students must seek the approval of the Head of Department. This credit would normally take the form of an assignment not exceeding 4000 words.
