DESCRIPTION The unit will serve as a bridge between the taught component of the students' MA studies and their dissertation. Through a series of seminars focusing on a range of different topics and concepts, the unit will explore ways of how to conduct high-standard creative research.

Through a discussion of key contributors to cultural studies, the unit will take the students through the main steps of the research process, including reviewing existing literature, identifying valid research questions, formulating a viable methodology for the research and the executing the research through reading, analysis, critique, writing, editing and peer reviewing.

Study-unit Aims:

To prepare students for the standards required to do well in their dissertation;
To carry out a series of case studies aimed at offering students practice in the main stages of research;
To help students develop as independent researchers;
To raise the students' meta-awareness about the research process.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Evaluate the importance of previous research in their field of studies;
2. Critically assess the validity of previous research in their field of studies;
3. Employ previous research in their own research projects;
4. Achieve a more developed meta-awareness about their own writing and that of other postgraduate researchers.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Conduct a case study in their field of research;
2. Evaluate previous research in their field;
3. Apply theory to cultural products and processes;
4. Peer review the work of other students;
5. Assess the strengths and weakness in their own research.
