DESCRIPTION The seminar assignment shall be scheduled, on the advice of the Supervisor, at least 4 months full-time (or equivalent) after the commencement of the course.

Students shall carry out a 40-45 minute oral presentation to an audience consisting, inter alia, of members of the Faculty and students.

Students shall also submit and present an academic poster which summarizes the content of the presentation in the style that is adopted at academic conferences.

The presentation shall consist of the student's appraisal of a subject area related to that of the dissertation. The presentation shall conclude with a brief expose of the proposed solution to be used in the dissertation, but will not include a discussion of the results or techniques used in the dissertation.

Students shall answer questions posed by the audience and should demonstrate their familiarity with the literature and work being done in the subject area.

The seminar assignment shall be assessed by members of a panel made up of the Supervisor plus at least two other members of staff appointed by the Faculty Board. The panel will assess the oral presentation on the level of technical content, visual presentation, oral presentation and the answers to questions raised by the audience. The same panel will assess the poster on visual presentation, legibility, organization of material, use of graphics and clarity.

Study-unit Aims:

1. To train the student in the skill of sorting out the information collected in the course of his work and putting it together in an intelligible, informative and interesting manner both as an oral presentation and as an academic poster.
2. To give the student the opportunity to gain experience in the methodology of preparing a presentation, in the use of software such as PowerPoint, in making a presentation within the given time constraints and in engaging with his audience both during the actual presentation, and in answering questions from his tutors and peers.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to situate the proposed work for the M.Sc. in its historical / technological / intellectual context.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- collect the material for his presentation, sort it out methodically, select what is important and relevant to the theme of his presentation, create the structure of his presentation, insert the selected material within this structure, present his material in an attractive and informative manner, using an appropriate software,
- speak to an audience of technical people within the time allowed with the right speed and tone of voice to retain the attention of his audience and without hesitation,
- answer questions put to him in an intelligent and honest manner,
- collate and organize the material of the presentation in the form of an academic poster.
