DESCRIPTION This study-unit aims to establish a shared vision of what is expected of TP examiners when conducting assessments in Early Childhood and Primary school settings. It will offer insights about what to observe and assess while visiting student teachers during field placement. It will also provide field placement examiners with guidance about completing the examiners’ report to ensure conformity and uniformity in the way examiners assess students. This study-unit will offer TP examiners the opportunity to discuss assessment criteria followed when visiting students and completing reports.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to share the principles underlying the courses in Early Childhood and Primary Education offered by the Department of Early Childhood and Primary Education. It aims to provide prospective examiners with an understanding of how TP visits are to be conducted and to provide clear guidance on how to assess student teachers during their field placement. This study-unit will offer examiners the opportunity to interact and learn from other’s experiences and thus, build a community of learners.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Articulate the principles and procedures involved in taking on the role of a TP examiner;
- Explain the importance of providing constructive feedaback, supporting student-teachers and assessing their performance during field placements;
- Outline the underlying principles and processes in relation to observation, assessment, planning and reflective practices in early and primary education;
- Explain the ways in which student-teachers need to regularly update the required documentation during the TP;
- Explain the different components of the TP file; and
- Outine the benefits of a student-teacher and mentor relationship during TP.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Discuss and analyse the TP process;
- Reflect on critical issues related to the TP examination process;
- Liaise with co-examiner re time frames of Teaching Practice visit dates by communicating promptly through email and/or mobile communication clear plans/intentions;
- Mentor and offer support (professional, emotional, practical) to student-teachers where needed;
- Assess learner and student-teacher interactions;
- Assess the educator’s observation, assessment, planning and reflective practices;
- Assess the delivery of learning opportunities;
- Assess professional attitudes and conduct;
- Offer constructive feedback to student-teachers and mentors after the visit;
- Write an appropriate report; and
- A strong evidence-based position in his/her judgement, discuss the decision with other examiners, and request a third examiner on the case if need be.
