DESCRIPTION Students are asked to apply with a proposed title and short description of the work in the same way as they normally submit a proposal for a dissertation. They are required to write a properly researched and well annotated paper under supervision of one of the members of staff of the Institute on a subject which is considered to be in the forefront in the debate on European integration at the time when the application is launched. The paper has to be well structured with a brief literature review, a discussion of the methodology, empirical or qualitative analysis followed by clear conclusions. Not all applications need to be accepted and only those which are promising in terms of subject matter, relevance and quality of the proposal are accepted.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of the study-unit is to help students sharpen their focus, their research and writing skills in the tackling of a subject on European Integration according to the methods developed in the social sciences. It should help students gain greater confidence in venturing out in the formulation and publication of studied and properly argued academic papers that help in the further elucidation of current issues in European Studies.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will better understand how to set a research question or hypothesis in the writing of an academic paper or article grade work; know how to develop a literature review of a limited size and brevity that satisfies the requirements of an academic article; be better trained in using the literature review to formulate the research question or hypothesis; be better appraised of how to write neatly, clearly and most concisely within pre-established limits of 6,000 words including footnotes; gain further experience in the application of a methodology to the analysis and how to sift the relevant empirical data.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student should have gained sufficient skills to write a good, well-structured paper of a scientific nature.

There are no fixed texts or supplementary readings associated with this study-unit but under supervision and direction of the supervisor, the students builds up a bibliography for the approved subject of the paper.
