DESCRIPTION | The unit will study the interpretation and the development of the original confessions of faith, above all in the ecumenical councils of the first millennium (Nicaea, Constantinople, Ephesus, Chalcedon). Moreover various theologians and themes will also be analyzed and discussed. A particular emphasis shall be given to the connection between East and West, the scholastic synthesis and spiritual alternatives as well as recent theological notions that have paved the way to today’s committed Church which goes forth. Study-Unit Aims: - To assist the students understand the most crucial theological issues in the history of the Church; - To have a deeper knowledge of the basic cores the Christian tradition: the Fathers of the Church and all later major theologians with their contributions; - To establish a dialogue with the other subjects in Theology. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Analyze, synthesize and critically evaluate the main texts presented in class; - Appreciate the value of theological issues in the history of the Church; - Acquire a critical sense of thought in theological reflection. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Communicate the main concepts, ideas and theological approaches in an intelligible and structured manner; - Develop their thought basing themselves on the main concepts under study.
