DESCRIPTION | The study-unit will introduce students to the relationship between diet and the incidence of chronic disease. The first part of the unit will consist of an overview of dietary records and 24h recall and the evaluation of foods eaten in such time period. The evaluation of food components and the physiological changes indulgence or overindulgence can cause will be discussed. In the latter part of the unit these principles will be challenged and discussed in concert with the relationship between dietary habits, lifestyle and chronic illness. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit primarily aims to enable the students evaluate key issues relating to the relationship between dietary habits, lifestyle and chronic illness. Learning Outcomes: 1.Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - design 24h dietary recall and food records; - evaluate sources of dietary information; - demonstrate an understanding of biochemical indicators of dietary intake; - demonstrate an understanding of the principles of health and nutrition monitoring and surveillance. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - evaluate sources of dietary information, the significance of anthropometric measurements, body composition and their effect on health status and the incidence of disease; and - evaluate data presentation and analysis including that of diets.
