DESCRIPTION This study-unit is divided into two parts. The first part introduces and assesses contemporary theories relating to effective public speech. It examines the main categories of critical thinking skills required for researching and delivering speeches, with particular reference to aspects relating to credibility, information gathering, generating ideas, organisation, integrating and evaluating skills, and fielding questions. Using communicative strategies, this study unit includes tutor-led seminars and is specifically designed for Public Speaking. Students make team video presentations on topics of current interest.

The second part of the study-unit has two main objectives: intensive training in the French language and French culture, as well as the discovery of the social reality to which this language applies. On arrival, students take a test in French language in order to determine their level. In the case of beginners or students with limited knowledge of French. Priority is given to oral and written comprehension and oral and written production. During the second semester the objectives of the first semester will be pursued and reinforced.

French Language Contents:

1st Semester:

- Language: Oral and written comprehension and composition, teaching/reinforcement of basic grammar rules;

- Culture: Basic notions of geography, Paris and other French regions and francophonie.

2nd Semester:

- Language: Oral and written comprehension and composition. Teaching/reinforcement of basic grammar rules.
- Culture: Basic notions of French history, French institutions and other cultural aspects of contemporary France.

- Grand-Clément, O. Savoir-Vivre avec les Français, Hachette, Paris, 1996.
- Riehl, L., Soignet, M., Amiot, M.-H., Le Français des relations européennes et internationales, Hachette, Paris, 2006.

Handouts, based on the notion and function approach and mainly in dialogue form, are given to students according to their level. More advanced students work on authentic texts from newspa-pers, magazines, specialized internet sites, etc.

 
ADDITIONAL NOTES This study-unit cannot be taken by those students who are specialising in French.
