Esoteric correspondences conjured up by Baudelaire, clairvoyance, rearrangement of syntax, are some of the techniques that stimulate creativity. Twentieth century authors will also revolutionize the novel and make it better adapted to express the dilemmas of the modern world.

Learning outcomes:

- The student will have been introduced to the poetry of Baudelaire or the generation that succeeds this poet;
- The student will be able to distinguish between classical French poetry to which which he has already been introduced and late 19th century poetry;
- The student will be able to appreciate emphasis that Baudelaire and his successors placed on the image;
- The student will realize that this brand of poetry stems from the soul. In an industrialized world, there is room for a renaissance of the spirit;
- The student will be able to calmly reflect on a type of French literature that poses problems in comprehension;
- The student will acquire the necessary critical acumen to be able to comment in writing on such literature.
