DESCRIPTION L’objectif du cours est de former l’étudiant à l’analyse d’un texte tant d’un point de vue structurel que d’un point de vue énonciatif et discursif. Le cours traitera de la rhétorique et des dominantes tonales. Les principales notions étudiées seront celles d’énonciation, de dénotation et de connotation. Une attention particulière sera donnée aux figures de style.

The course will prepare students to perform text analysis, in a structual point of view and an enunciative and discursive point of view. The course will have rhetorics as its main content. The main notions that will be studied are enunciation, denotation and connotation. The study-unit will also focus on figures of speech.

Study-unit Aims:

- To familiarise students with the notions of enunciation, denotation and connotation;
- To familiarise students with the main figures of speech (metaphor, metonymy, synecdoche, oxymoron, antithesis, etc.) and the different register or level of language;
- To illustrate the stylistic notions of distinction, variation, and choice in French literary texts.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- define, identify and illustrate the main figures of speech of classical rhetoric, on presentation of a literary text. Students will also be expected to have an understanding of the distinction between denotation and connotation.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- have skills in rhetoric, improving their writing abilities and their interpretation of rhetorical strategies of any kind of discourse that makes a distinctive use of language (literature, advertising, political speech, song lyric, philosophy, etc.
