TITLE Une Littérature Française de Malte 2

UM LEVEL 02 - Years 2, 3 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 2

DEPARTMENT French

DESCRIPTION This study-unit introduces students to a literary Maltese heritage of manuscripts and printed works in French, written by French Knights of Malta in the eighteenth century, existing in the National Library of Malta. These are works covering a wide spectrum of subjects, however, this study-unit proposes a deeper study of one particular author whose works have been published recently, namely, a diary that reflects life in Malta in the last quarter of the eighteenth century.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims at raising the student's awareness of the cultural heritage represented by writings in French of the Knights of St John in the National Library of Malta, thereby arousing their interest in the works under study and eventually in other writings in French by other members of the Order of St John.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to appreciate the original eighteenth century French texts of the National Library of Malta. Moreover, the student will be given the opportunity to see the manuscripts, thus to familiarise him/herself with the orthography, grammar and expressions in use in Malta by the French Knights and draw a comparison between these texts and those of contemporary French authors.

The student will also discover the life and wanderings of Abbé Boyer and his very interesting diary of events taking place in Malta in 1738 and from 1774 to 1777.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- make a critical analysis of these texts, especially as far as the style of Abbé Boyer was influenced by his readings of French authors with whom the students are familiar;
- assess the extent to which these writings were influenced by the Enlightenment.
