DESCRIPTION In general, the term “théâtre contemporain francophone”, brings to mind Ionesco, Beckett, Camus, Sartre, Sony Labou Tansi, Bernard-Marie Koltès … that is, a theatre which, in a very disparate way, covers the period from the Fifties to the Eighties and mainly brings together French authors. Now the Nineties and the first decade of the new millennium have seen the emergence and the affirmation of several French and Francophone authors, with new concerns, a new language, and a new concept regarding dramatic art: the French Laurent Gaudé, Philippe Minyana, Xavier Durringer; the Croatian Sonia Ristic; Koffi Kwahulé from the Ivory Coast; Normand Chaurette, Daniel Danis and Michel-Marc Bouchard from Quebec; José Pliya from Benin; Gustave Akakpo from Togo and the Algerian Mohammed Kacimi. What themes do they write about? What distinguishes them from their predecessors?

What characterizes their language? Their dramatic art? In what way are they innovators? Through an analysis of the main works of these playwrights, of their productions, of the way they conceive dramatic writing and dramatic art, this study-unit aims at clarifying the main aspects of their concerns, the boldness of their language and the novel features of their dramatic art.
