CODE FRE3035

TITLE Didactique du français langue étrangère/ Didactics of French as a Foreign Language

LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT French

DESCRIPTION This study-unit is an introduction to the methodology of teaching French as a foreign language (Français Langue Etrangère - FLE). The first part of the study-unit will focus on the historical evolution of teaching methodologies, from the traditional grammar-translation method to the communicative method and the “approche actionnelle” outlined in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Students will thus be in a position to better understand the rationale and underlying pedagogical principles of communicative methodologies of language teaching as well as to appraise FLE textbooks.

The second part of the study-unit focuses on contemporary, significant shifts involving the redesign of (language) teaching locally. The study-unit presents a contrast between, on the one hand, well-known teaching and evaluation methods used in the French as a Foreign Language (FFL) scenario used up to the later part of the 2010s, and, on the other hand, the new approaches which replaced them, based on a Learning Outcomes Framework and Formative Assessment. Additionally, specific characteristics of the local FFL teaching and learning situation are highlighted, in relation with the practice of the five language skills. Reference is made to the language of instruction issues, within the context of the Maltese bilingual and multicultural educational system.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To make students aware of the historical evolution of teaching methodologies, from the traditional grammar-translation method to the communicative method and the “approche actionnelle”;
- To guide students in the criteria used to appraise FLE textbooks;
- To familiarise students with contemporary, significant shifts involving the redesign of (language) teaching locally.
