DESCRIPTION The study-unit will cover basic principles of health promotion and public health nutrition and apply these principles to various settings, scenarios and population groups within a health promotion context.

Furthermore it will develop key areas of topical interest to health promotion and public health nutrition such as campaign design, and other tools and strategies and how all these can be utilised effectively within health promotion.

Students will also be exposed to other public health topics which include inequalities and the impact on health, initiatives and strategies utilised in public health locally and globally, stigma and advocacy.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aim of the study-unit is to describe and develop the study area of health promotion and public health nutrition, with its unique challenges and to investigate further key concepts in health promotion and apply them to particular settings and scenarios.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe different health promotion settings; and
- Define and illustrate various concepts relating to health and its determinants, public health nutrition, health promotion, well being and disease prevention; and
- Discuss and report current topics of interest in health promotion, particularly relating to advocacy, health inequalities and stigma.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Evaluate these health promotion principles in relation to specific issues and population groups;
- Critically report and interpret topical public health issues such as pandemics and the public health response;
-Critique and compare different initiatives, globally and locally, and their documented impact such as reformulation, junk food taxes and others; and
- Analyse and compare different strategies including health promotion campaigns.
