TITLE Dissertation

LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course


DEPARTMENT Food Sciences and Nutrition

DESCRIPTION The dissertation project is a short research study focusing on a topical area of interest in the field of nutrition, which will be developed by the student under the direct supervision of an expert in the field (the academic supervisor).

Study-unit Aims:

- To provide students with the opportunity to develop a research project in an area of nutrition interest in some detail;
- To enable students to put some research methodology theory into practice; and
- To familiarise students with independent investigation.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Explain the basic underlying principles of their topic of research interest;
- Describe the issue chosen in greater detail and demonstrate a level of knowledge in the selected subject area; and
- Demonstrate an understanding for time management and planning relating to developing and submitting the project within stipulated deadlines.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Critically appraise and review scientific literature relating to the nutritional sciences and be able to describe their implications to the public health scenario in the discussion;
- Produce a detailed project describing a current topic of interest, its aims and main priorities and its relevance to world health;
- Analyse and interpret quantitative and/or qualitative data using appropriate statistical methods; and
- Develop time management and planning skills relating to project administration and execution according to stipulated deadlines.

Relevant articles and technical reports (continuously updated) as recommended by academic supervisor/s.

ADDITIONAL NOTES **Resit Availability: Students who fail to obtain an overall pass mark will be re-examined in the Dissertation. However, the resit availability for the Oral Examination is at the discretion of the Board of Examiners.
