DESCRIPTION The study-unit introduces students to the field of Cultural Geography. Through an understanding of the main areas of study within the field, the study unit presents the main elements of cultural geography such as cultural politics, cultural landscapes and identity. The study unit selects a number of topics and areas of research within the field of cultural geography and takes the student through the development of the sub-field and its main outcomes of recent research.

Topics include gender and geography, race, the geography of sexuality, as well as topics on food and health geographies.

Study-unit Aims:

- To explain the development of cultural geography and its applicability to the wider context of studies in geography;
- To examine the various aspects of cultural geography;
- To assist students in understanding the framework within which culture operates;
- To assist students in understanding various sub-fields of cultural geography such as gender, sexuality and race amongst others.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- define cultural geography, cultural politics and culture landscapes;
- identify elements of culture and geographies in the natural and anthropogenic landscapes;
- describe the research agenda for cultural geography globally and nationally;
- comprehend in more depth key sub-fields in cultural geography such as gender, race and sexuality.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- develop models of spatial diffusion (of cultural phenomena and trends);
- analyse spatial trends in multiple cultural contexts;
- review and research academic literature;
- apply and identify geographic relationships in cultural studies.
