DESCRIPTION This study-unit highlights the use of the German language in a law context. The course content strives to offer a solid understanding of the typical legal vocabulary and terminologies commonly practiced amongst legal practitioners. This is clearly illustrated through the presentation of typical legal contracts, law codes, legal texts and other written communications related to legal issues.

The listening comprehension will consist of certain video and audio extracts taken from a number of public court cases.

During the second half of the semester students will be introduced to the productive skills in legal communication through the formulation of legal texts, drafting contracts and legal letter writing. The oral communication will consist of role-pays of common court sittings.

Study-unit Aims

This study-unit aims to enhance the students' knowledge of the specific German used in law contexts and to amplify their vocabulary in the terminology of the same area.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- demonstrate an understanding of complex German texts related to legal issues;
- comprehend specific German terminology used in the law context;
- have basic knowledge on the German legal system.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- make use of a better command of German terminology on legal issues;
- read authentic German texts on legal issues;
- express rather complex legal facts in German.
