DESCRIPTION | A short introduction to various aspects of German culture will be provided in this study-unit. It will engage with significant eras and turning points in German cultural history. Important examples of cultural phenomena will be studied; these can range from literary to philosophical texts as well as works of fine art, music or film. As a continuation of the study-unit “Intercultural Diversities and Communication”, this unit offers an introduction to historical as well as contemporary aspects of German culture in order to develop students’ understanding of this wide-ranging field. Study-unit Aims: The study-unit aims at furthering an understanding of German culture and thereby helping students to communicate more effectively in a German-language cultural context as well as offering an introduction to fascinating aspects of an influential European culture. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - describe and discuss central aspects of German culture; - situate German-language cultural phenomena in a historical context; - describe and discuss German culture in a European and global context. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - engage in German-language conversations on topics of culture; - demonstrate an understanding of the background and context of German culture more fully; - use more developed communication skills in intercultural encounters.
