DESCRIPTION This study-unit offers an introduction to modern Hebrew literature, covering works from before the formation of the state of Israel down to the present. Lectures will explore the works of a wide range of Israeli and/or Jewish writers and poets (e.g., Chaim Nachman Bialik, Shaye Agnon, Natan Alterman, Chaim Hefer, Naomi Shemer, Amos Oz, Ephraim Kishon, Leah Goldberg) and analyze their respective literary merits as well as their historical and socio-cultural setting. The lectures will be carried out in English and no knowledge of Hebrew is required.

Study-unit Aims:

The aims of the study-unit are:
1. to offer students an introduction to modern Hebrew literature, with a focus on writers and poets of the 20th and 21st centuries;
2. to explore the different historical and socio-cultural settings in which modern Hebrew literary works emerged.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. name the major Israeli/Jewish writers and poets of the 20th and 21st centuries;
2. describe the corpus of work of the major Israeli/Jewish writers and poets as well as their respective literary achievements;
3. analyze the historical and socio-cultural setting of the respective writers and poets and appraise its impact on their work.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. use literature to reconstruct the socio-cultural, historical, political, and ideological contexts in which it was produced;
2. develop an interdisciplinary sensibility and appreciate literature not merely as art but also as social, political, and cultural discourse.
