TITLE Synoptic Study-unit 2: Ancient Israel and Judaism

DESCRIPTION This study-unit will examine students in a synoptic manner on material covered throughout the course of studies pertaining to the history and archaeology of the Holy Land; ancient Israel; Jews and Judaism in the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, and Early Islamic periods; and other aspects of the ancient Near East. Students will prepare for this study unit by personal study and some seminar sessions with the respective tutors.

Study-unit Aims:

- To integrate all study-units dealing with ancient Israel and Judaism;
- To train students to adopt a synoptic approach to all this material and make critical cultural comparisons between different stages in the history of ancient Israel and Judaism;
- To train students to apply critically both textual and archaeological evidence.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Compare and contrast the culture and thought characteristic of different periods in the history of ancient Israel and Judaism, and formulate a synthesis which traces developments in culture, practices, and beliefs;
- Appraise and debate some of the major cultural and historical processes to have shaped ancient Israel and Judaism;
- Analyze and interpret pertinent textual and archaeological evidence, and evaluate competing interpretations of the data.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Integrate textual and archaeological evidence in a critical manner;
- Synthesize complex sets of data;
- Criticize and evaluate competing interpretations of textual and archaeological data, and determine which readings are more or less probable;
- Reflect on the interconnectedness of seemingly disparate cultural and historical processes;
- Acquire an interdisciplinary sensibility.
