DESCRIPTION This is the second of two study-units dedicated to communicating in Modern Hebrew. It builds on and consolidates the speaking and listening elements tackled in Functional Modern Hebrew 1, and a new focus on written communication is introduced. By the end of the semester, students will be able to carry out conversations in Modern Hebrew and communicate effectively in writing.

Study-unit Aims:

The aims of the study-unit are:
1. to train students to communicate effectively in Modern Hebrew in all the four linguistic competencies (listening, reading, speaking, writing).

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. identify and recognize different styles of writing in Modern Hebrew;
2. communicate in different forms of writing in Modern Hebrew, using the correct genre conventions;
3. listen to and speak Modern Hebrew, using both the formal and colloquial registers of the language.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. engage in conversation with native speakers of Modern Hebrew;
2. listen to and comprehend audio-visual media in Modern Hebrew;
3. read a wide range of written material in Modern Hebrew, including writing in everyday settings;
4. apply knowledge about Jewish and Israeli culture in social interactions.

Extensive notes and relevant material, including audio-visual media, will be provided by the lecturer in class.
