TITLE Synoptic Study-Unit 1: Language and Literature

DESCRIPTION This study-unit will examine students in a synoptic manner on material covered throughout the course of studies pertaining to Hebrew language and literature, such as the Hebrew Bible, the Dead Sea Scrolls, rabbinic literature, and modern Israeli/Jewish literature. Students will prepare for this study-unit through personal study and tutorial sessions with the respective tutors.

Study-unit Aims:

The aims of the study-unit are:
1. to integrate all study-units dealing with the reading of biblical texts, Dead Sea Scrolls, rabbinic literature, and modern Israeli/Jewish literature in the original Hebrew;
2. to train students to adopt a synoptic approach to all this material and create the necessary linguistic and thematic links between different, but related texts;
3. to train students to develop an interdisciplinary sensibility and integrate linguistic, literary, and historical approaches to the reading of Hebrew/Jewish texts.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. demonstrate an intermediate/advanced understanding of Classical and Modern Hebrew;
2. generate linguistic and thematic links between different bodies of texts, including the Hebrew Bible, the Dead Sea Scrolls, rabbinic literature, and modern Israeli/Jewish literature;
3. formulate historical, cultural, and linguistic syntheses on the basis of these texts;
4. apply a wide range of interpretative approaches to the reading of these texts.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. develop an interdisciplinary sensibility;
2. synthesize and evaluate disparate, but related, sets of data;
3. demonstrate a high level of critical thinking.
