DESCRIPTION The purpose of this study-unit is to make the student aware of certain major issues within the Church in between the two World Wars. In fact pre WWI and WWII Christianity sowed the seed for the post War Church and indeed the Conciliar Church. The European and world background to the Church of early and mid -20th century was very different from the 21st century, however even then change and turmoil and a changing world order set in.

The pontificates of Benedict XV, Pius XI and Pius XII reflected both the Church at that time and also a response to the events which straddled their pontificate: Two World Wars and also ecclesial life and institutions: aspects of diocesan life; facing totalitarian states; catholic lay theologians and authors as well as politicians. Concurrent with events effecting the Catholic Church, Protestant and Orthodox Christianity also had their struggles and contribution to make to the European and ecclesial scenes.
