DESCRIPTION It is the aim of the present study-unit to identify and evaluate the Hospitaller institution in its fourteenth- and fifteenth-century state of development. To realize this objective, lectures and seminars will be conducted round the following themes:

• The development of the Order’s network of priories and commanderies throughout Europe. It was from these European estates that wealth (in the form of responsiones) and manpower were ‘collected and transferred … to the Mediterranean frontline’. Stepping into Templar landed wealth.

• Consolidation of the Order’s internal government and administration.

• Membership of the Order (priests, knights, sergeants, nuns); proofs of nobility.

• The creation of the first Hospitaller State – the Pragmaticae Rhodiae, the Castellania, and the general government of the island of Rhodes. Banking and corsairing on Rhodes. Church-State relations.

• Relations with the papacy in the 14th and 15th centuries. Hospitaller Rhodes and International Relations.

• The Hospitallers as Patrons of Art on Rhodes.

• The political, social, economic, and cultural transformation of Hospitaller Rhodes – that is, from c.1310 to 1522.

Intended Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the study-unit, candidates will be able to deepen their understanding of the new personality of the Order, and to demonstrate (a) a knowledge of selected bodies of evidence relevant to the study of the issues brought up for discussion during the seminars, and of the problems of their interpretation; and (b) an advanced ability to deal with the specificity of Hospitaller sources, both written and unwritten, and to address broad methodological issues.
