DEPARTMENT History

 
DESCRIPTION Every candidate is expected to write a research dissertation of 25,000 words, with a value of 30 ECTS credits, on a theme related to any aspect of Hospitaller history and for which the bulk of the documentary evidence is to be found in any of the libraries or archives on Malta. The choice of topic needs the approval of the Board of Studies. Every candidate will be assigned a tutor to supervise his (or her) research and the writing of the dissertation.

Intended Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of the study-unit, candidates will have acquired an ability (a) to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the nature of primary evidence available in the Order’s archives on Malta; (b) to develop their own research skills, with emphasis on (i) data collection and analysis, (ii) literature searching, (iii) refinement of a research topic and strategy; (c) to communicate clearly orally and in writing research results; (d) to demonstrate a practical understanding of how research techniques have been used to interpret [the theme]; (e) to deal with complex issues systematically and creatively; and (f) to undertake doctoral research, should they so wish.

 
ADDITIONAL NOTES **September Assessment Session: Students who fail to obtain an overall pass mark will be re-examined in the Dissertation. However, the resit availability for the Oral Examination is at the discretion of the Board of Examiners.
