TITLE Inclusive Communities Beyond Schooling

DESCRIPTION Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to assist the students to:

- Switch the focus of intervention from school to the family and the community at large in order to facilitate the children’s inclusion in these areas;
- Work with families, NGO’s (those giving support services and leisure opportunities), refugees and exploring ways of introducing the Maltese cultural heritage to all;
- Work on a project outside school for the benefit of all learners.

Learning Outcomes:

1.Knowlege & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Define quality of life and the issues involved;
- Define the concept of self determination;
- Recognize and describe the important issues when working with families;
- Identify the major issues involved in including learners of refugees at school and in the community;
- List ways of creating inclusive communities outside school;
- Describe and discuss Maltese culture;
- Define museums for all and describe their major characteristics;
- Identify the meaning of inclusive leisure activities and sports.

2.Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Implement programmes to enhance self–determination and Quality of life;
- Analyse the issues involved when working with specific families;
- Identify the major issues involved in including learners of refugees at school and in the community;
- List ways of creating inclusive communities outside school;
- Describe and discuss Maltese culture in relation to inclusive practices;
- Define Museums for all and describe their major characteristic:
    - Examine museums and plan school outings to specific museums with all students in mind;
    - Plan inclusive leisure activities and sports.
