TITLE Global Politics of Indignation

LEVEL 02 - Years 2, 3 in Modular Undergraduate Course

DESCRIPTION This study-unit will focus on the issue of the global politics of Indignation against Neoliberalism. The term Neoliberalism will be explained and some of its implications drawn out. We shall analyse both its economic and extra economic features. We shall focus on its trial run in Chile from the mid 70s which gave rise to what in Latin America is known as the first September 11 and then proceed to analyse its becoming a global ideology.

Neoliberalism's implications for the job situation and issues such as migration will be viewed. We shall also tackle the myth of the withdrawal of the state under neoliberalism and hegemonic globalisation. What roles does the State play in this context? One other issue to be tackled is the role of Higher Education under Neoliberalism. We shall then focus on different reactions to this ideology at the level of popular mass manifestations among students, youth, unemployed and different social movements.

Study-unit Aims:

- To enable students to focus coherently on a range of contemporary global issues and manifestations.
- To explore 'Hegemony' as a conceptual tool to help make theoretical sense of these issues - its limits and possibilities.
- To assist students in gaining a good and nuanced understanding of globalisation, its merits and its discontents.
- To analyse some of the underpinnings, ideological or otherwise, of the different forms of globalisation.
- To assist students with making theoretical sense of the upsurge of protests in different parts of the world around 2011-2014 with specific reference to Europe and the Arab world.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of some of the origins of past and current manifestations of Indignation.
- Demonstrate an understanding of Hegemonic Globalisation, Neoliberalism and their Discontents.
- Appreciate some of the limits and possibilities of popular manifestations of Indignation against Neoliberalism.
- Demonstrate an understanding of different mobilisations such as past and present revolutions in Latin America and popular uprisings in the Arab world, the US and Europe ( especially Italy, Spain, Greece and Turkey), underlining their impact and contradictions.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Theorise out of scattered analyses of historical events.
- Debate issues from a comparative and international perspective.
- Provide a coherent overview of a whole series of initiatives in an articulate manner, especially when writing the course paper.
- Improve manner of conceptualisation.
