DESCRIPTION The study-unit will introduce students to domestic political factors that impact foreign policy decision-making and priorities, and the historical and geopolitical foreign policy traditions that inform contemporary interests and foreign policy choices. The study-unit will undertake a detailed assessment of current issues within the foreign policies of European States, including relations within the EU, bilateral and multilateral relations and partnerships, both within European and beyond, and the security issues and strategic postures of these states.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to review the foreign policies of key European nation states and provide a thorough understanding of their role within European and international affairs.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- discuss how key European states contsrtuct and conduct foreign policy;
- describe how history, resources, location and geopolitics impact the foreign policy making of European states;
- assess the linkages between the individual foreign policies of European States and their association with multilateral fora.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- evaluate the methods and tools adopted by European states on the international circuit;
- discuss long term trends and patterns in the foreign policies of European states;
- analyse the impact of their foreign policy decisions on regional and international political developments.
