DESCRIPTION This study-unit introduces Geographic Information Systems and Science to the programme participants. It covers the principles of GIS and Science with a description of the various components making up a GISystem, it then presents the functions of a GIS including:
- data input
- data management
- data analysis
- data visualisation
A core concern of this study is to ensure it provides the necessary background information for the participants to engage in the various study-units in this programme.

Study-unit Aims

The study-unit aims to provide participants with knowledge of Geographic Information Systems and Science, the main functions of GIS and the ways in which Geographic Information Systems are applied.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- describe what a Geographic Information System is
- demonstrate its use on an application
- explain the main functions of a GIS

2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- actively participate in a GIS project
- use appropriate terminology relevant to the technology in question
