DESCRIPTION The study-unit will cover the following themes:

● Introduction to economic principles
● The meaning of economic development
● Policies suitable to promote economic development
● Problems faced by small island economies
● The economy of Gozo: 1964 to present times
● A focus on Gozo’s current economic problems
● Gozo as a region within the EU
● Prospects for the Gozitan economy, given its double insularity and small size.

Study-unit Aims

The study-unit is intended to explain the main factors that lead to economic development of an economy, including that of small islands, with special reference to Gozo.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the basic factors that lead to economic development and economic backwardness, and to associate these factors with the realities of the Gozitan economy.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit, students will have improved their communication skills and be better able to work in teams. The unit will also enable the students to develop other skills associated with sourcing and inferring tendencies from quantitative and qualitative economic data, critically evaluating economic realities, and interpreting the stages of development. Students will find such skills useful for their career improvement and for life in general.
