TITLE Economic and Social Statistical Sources for the Island of Gozo

DESCRIPTION The study-unit will cover the following themes:

● An overview of the operations of the NSO and its relations with EUROSTAT
● Regional economic statistics for Gozo (and trends)
● Regional demographic statistics for Gozo (and trends)
● Regional social and related statistics for Gozo (and trends)
● Regional environmental statistics for Gozo (and trends)
● Gozo and the Census of Population

Study-unit Aims

The study-unit aims to familiarise students with published statistics (including metadata) relating to the economic, demographic and social statistics of Gozo. The main statistical sources to be referred to will be the National Statistics Office and EUROSTAT. Such familiarisation will enable students to better understand the socio-economic realities of Gozo, and to find factual information to back up arguments made in their assignments.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit, the students will be able to have a good degree of familiarisation with the socio-economic statistics pertaining to Gozo, published mainly by the National Statistics Office and by EUROSTAT, and to comprehend metadata and other processes on their method of compilation. The students will also be able to interpret the data and assess its benefits and limitations.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit, students will have improved their ability to source and interpret published data relating to the economy and to society in general and developed other skills associated with inferring tendencies from quantitative and qualitative information.

Students will find such skills useful for their career improvement and for life in general.
