DESCRIPTION The study-unit will cover the following themes:

● Late Medieval currents and the Early Modern Vernacular Idiom
● Mattia Preti and his Contemporaries
● Francesco Zahra and the Eighteenth Century
● Nazarene and Purist Currents
● Giuseppe Calì and the turn of the twentieth century
● Nineteenth Century Statuary
● The Ecclesiastical Decorative Arts
● Italian artists in the nineteenth and twentieth century
● Twentieth Century Painting and Sculpture

Apart from class room lectures the students will have visits to places associated the visual artistic heritage of Gozo

Study-unit Aims

The study-unit is designed to offer students an overview of the main artistic currents as they manifested themselves in Gozo from the Late Middle Ages to the mid twentieth century, within its wider national and continental contexts. The study-unit will include on-site lectures in places of artistic importance on the island.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit, students will have familiarized themselves with the protagonists of artistic production in Gozo over a period of around four centuries and will be able to appreciate better the artistic heritage of the island. Comparative and analytical studies during class-room lectures and on-site discussions should enable participants to understand the stylistic and iconographic development of Art in Gozo.

2. Skills:

By the end of the students will have improved their ability to appreciate the visual arts basing their knowledge on written sources and visits to places where major works of art are exhibited in Gozo. This would enable students to pass on this knowledge to others.
