DESCRIPTION The study-unit will cover the following themes:

● History of music from baroque to modern times
● Overview of history of music in Gozo
● Religious music in Gozo, with special reference to antiphons
● Guseppe Farrugia and other major Gozitan composers
● Influence of the regimental bands in the late nineteenth century
● The Gozitan bands

Apart from class room lectures the students will have the opportunity to listen to recorded music associated with the musical heritage of Gozo.

Study-unit Aims

The study-unit is intended to familiarize students with the history of European music, focussing on the historical evolution of music in Gozo. The unit will also cover themes relating to the manner in which music has been and is being practiced in Gozo.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the students will have familiarized themselves with the historic evolution of music in Europe, with a focus on religious and secular music in Gozo. The unit will also cover themes relating to the manner in which music has been and is being practiced in Gozo.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit, students will have improved their ability to appreciate the importance of music in general and the musical heritage in Gozo, thereby helping to pass on this knowledge to others.
