DESCRIPTION The study-unit is intended to give a broad overview of conservation and restoration of textiles thereby enabling the students to understand basic principles in this regard. It also aims to foster an interest in developing conservation and restoration skills. It relates conservation and restoration of textiles to the preservation and protection of cultural heritage. The study-unit has an ethical dimension in that it emphasizes the need for students to feel it their duty to promote the need for restoration and conservation of textiles when these from part of the cultural heritage. The study-unit will consist of lectures supported by hands-on sessions.

Study-unit Aims

Study-unit objective:
The objective of this study-unit is to give the students the tools to enable them to understand the basic principles related to conservation and restoration of textiles. It also aims at enabling students to understand that restoration is only one aspect of the conservation of textile artefacts, and that preservation and conservation should be the key factors that should be kept in mind in the protection of cultural heritage which includes also textile artefacts. Another aim of the study-unit is to help the students understand the basic ethical notions of conservation and their application.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Understand the basic principles relating to conservation and restoration of textiles,
- Understand that restoration is only one aspect of the conservation of textile artefacts,
- Appreciate that preservation and conservation should be the key factors that should be kept in mind in the protection of cultural heritage which includes also textile artefacts,
- Understand the basic ethical notions of conservation and their application.

2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Acquire knowledge relating to the restoration and conservation of textiles,
- Decide whether a textile needs to be conserved,
- Decide when to consult the conservator,
- Acquire skills to apply preventive measures to stop or retard the deterioration process, when the textile cannot be conserved.
