DESCRIPTION Study-unit objective:

This unit builds on the knowledge gained in ISS1803.

Study-unit topics:

- The characteristics and properties of textile fibres used in historic and modern dress and accessories.
- Overview of the construction of fibres, yarns and fabrics used in secular, ceremonial and ecclesiastical textiles that have been embellished with lace.
- Cultural contacts, technological developments, political, economic and social factors that influenced the forms and functions of costume from the sixteenth century to the present time.
- Comparisons and contrasts of Maltese fashions will be made with other Western countries, including characteristic accessories identifiable as being Maltese.
- The study and documentation of lace used in ecclesiastical textiles, as well as the care and storage of secular, ceremonial and ecclesiastical items embellished with lace.
