ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Italian

DESCRIPTION Philology of written and literary texts is a hybrid discipline based on a strong comparative approach which combines linguistics and history with textual and literary criticism. The first part of this study-unit will be dedicated to a general survey of the history and the development of philology, from its origins to the present day. Within this intriguing trajectory, the Greek-speaking ancient scholars who tried to establish standard texts of widely-circulated works as well as the humanists’ meticulous rediscovery of classical antiquity will be also discussed. Particular emphasis will be placed on different methods of analysing the ‘witnesses’ in order to select the best ‘variant’, ranging from stemmatics and genetic criticism to Dante Isella’s ‘filologia d’autore’ (authorial philology). The second part of the study-unit will examine selected excerpts of critical editions and textual passages of prominent Italian literary works.

Study-unit Aims:

- To introduce the students to the multifaceted notion and praxis of philology;
- To discuss the role and permutations of philology over the centuries;
- To survey the application of different philological methodologies to textual analysis.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- discuss philology as a hybrid discipline, in relation to a broader understanding of literary texts;
- critically appraise different philological schools of thought, as well as their methodologies;
- demonstrate a sound knowledge of the main terminology deployed by philologists in their analysis of literary texts.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- develop the skills which are necessary for a judicious use of critical or genetic editions, with their apparatus of textual variation;
- enhance his or her skills in textual analysis via an understanding of the key elements of literary texts (manuscripts, typescripts, and printed editions);
- transfer his or her knowledge of philological praxes to the analysis of language and style in literature in general.
