At the same time, we will reflect on the Italian cultural and social contests during the XIX century.

The following part of the study-unit will both be analytical: different Italian and European masterpieces will be read and discussed in class. The students will follow the development of the modern Italian novel. We will reflect on the Historical novel, with a close reading of Alessandro Manzoni's I promessi sposi. We will study literary realism with a particular focus on the works of Pirandello, Svevo, Vittorini and Pavese.
