DESCRIPTION Students will be asked to spend 40 hours in an ICT-related company or agency in order to gain experience of a real-world work situation as 'employees'. This experience will prepare the student for the job market and the professional world.

In order to cater for the contingency that, for some reason, no placements are available to a student, a mini-project with a practical, work-oriented content will be assigned.

Study-unit Aims

- exposure to a practical, real life industrial and business environment;
- familiarisation with the opportunities that exist for careers in ICT;
- development of contacts which might be useful for a career;
- enhancment of employability opportunities;
- participation in the day-to-day running and operation of a company/agency.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- make use of their experience of a real work environment to inform future decisions about research (for example, in choosing a topic for a final year project);
- put theoretical knowledge of Human Language Technology in the context of the requirements of a work environment;

2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- recognise the nature of the skills and attitudes required for success in a future career;
- develop a willingness to face practical solutions to work related problems;
- develop a capacity to undertake duties required for employment;
- evaluate and report upon the requirements and challenges of a professional career.

No texts are pre-set for this course; readings will be selected on a case-by-case basis depending on the nature of the placement.

 
ADDITIONAL NOTES This study-unit is only available to BSc HLT students (industrial placement).
